Know your Norimake from your Nigiri? Your Wakame from your Wasabi? Nights spent lingering over feasts of sushi and saké needn’t be few and far between, with an array of affordable and tempting options dotted around Dublin.

Whether you’re after an indulgent dinner with every kind of roll under the sun taking up the entire table, or a light and healthy sea feast of sashimi and seaweed salad, here are 10 of Dublin’s best sushi restaurants to have on hand for the next time the craving takes you. Many of these picks are also BYO, so you can wine and dine well for less.

Michie Sushi

A stalwart on the Dublin sushi scene, this cosy Ranelagh gem has been giving the people of D6 and beyond their fix for over ten years. Luckily, there are now branches in Sandyford and Dun Laoghaire, as well as a counter in Avoca Rathcoole, so you’re never too far from your Michie fix. Their delectable Soft Shell Crab Roll is an utter delight and will leave you craving a visit long after you have left.

Taste by Dylan

For a tastebud enveloping experience far beyond the run of the mill, a trip to Taste by Dylan McGrath is a must. On the higher end of the sushi spectrum, this isn’t a budget dining experience, but from your first bite of Tuna Temaki cones to luscious Tataki Scallop Sashimi, dinner here is always a memorable occasion.

Their Omakase selection entrusts the chef with the tough decisions, and you can expect innovative upgrades on Nigiri, like torched Sea Bass with smoked bacon and truffle and Kabayaki Eel with umami rich Tare sauce to send your tastebuds into a frenzy. Come hungry and come often.

Musashi

If you fancy eating like a king sans the princely sum at the end, Musashi is always a solid bet. Their sashimi and sushi platters always feel like a feast and are more than enough for two, with room to add on some tempting sides like Tako Sunamono, a treat of a Japanese salad with fresh seaweed and sushi octopus.

A BYO gem, Musashi has eat-in branches in the city centre on Capel Street, Hogan Place and in the IFSC, so pick up a light dry white like Riesling or Gruner Vetliner for a delicious feast on a budget.

Ku Raudo

A bit of an underrated find, Ku Raudo on Townsend Street is the spot to go to if you have veggies in tow – their vegetarian sushi range is extensive and sure to keep everyone happy. Try something a little different with their vast selection of special rolls, packed with tempting fillings like the Kazee Roll’s crispy katsu prawn and bbq eel. As with many of the spots on this list, it is BYO and delightfully, corkage is free!

Yamamori Izakaya

For deliciousness beyond your average roll, Yamamori Izakaya is like a little taste of Tokyo on South Great George’s Street. Order their Unagi Tuna Norimake, a seriously generous banquet of sticky and sweet eel in kimchee dressing alongside salty wakame, arranged atop a dozen pieces bulging with ruby chunks of fresh tuna. You’ll never believe you can dine so well for €19.95.

Izakaya also offers a very tempting array of Japanese Tapas from every kind of deliciously crisp tempura to Octopus Balls and rich Okinawa Pork Belly, all of which come in around the €9 mark for hefty sharing portions, if your fellow diners fancy something different from sushi.

Zakura

Zakura is another perfect laid back BYO sushi joint, so you can pop into Baggot Street Wines and pick up the perfect drop to accompany your feast if visiting the Izakaya branch, or Fresh on Camden Street if you’re heading to Wicklow Street. Sounds like the perfect way to kick off a night in town!

Takara

The small, well lit and inviting little outpost on Abbey Street known as Takara offers Japanese takeaway favourites including bento boxes and ramen and has a scattering of tables in case you feel like eating in. What truly sets it apart is its “create your own futomaki roll” menu, which allows you to choose one protein, two vegetables and two dressings for €8.50, including a complimentary miso soup.

Banyi

In the heart of Temple Bar, Banyi is another well priced sushi spot serving up bountiful rolls in every variety imaginable. Pair up your feast with their dangerous-sounding Saké cocktails, like the Blood Bath, and kick off your night on the cobbles in style. They also offer a sushi making masterclass with a 5 course umami tasting menu afterwards, which sounds like a deliciously different way to spend date night.

Tokyo Kitchen

A little bit of a hidden gem, Tokyo Kitchen is a modest little outpost on Bow’s Street brought to you by the people behind Kish Fish. Located next-door to the famed fishmongers, you are guaranteed fantastically fresh seafood will be used to craft everything from Sesame Salmon Tataki to Smoked Coley Norimake. Here you can order a generous sushi platter, with nigiri, pickles and a tempura treat, for just €11. They’re only open until 4pm, so this is a tasty treat well worth expending your lunch hour on.

Not technically sushi, Poké bowls blend the flavours of Japan with a ray of Hawaiian sunshine and are perfect for sashimi lovers wanting a bit more oomph than simply sliced tuna belly. Niall Sabongi’s little beauty Klaw Poké on Capel Street serves bowls brimming with traditional sushi accessories like nori, rice and pickled ginger, all mixed up with exciting add ons like salted pineapple, kimchi, wakame and…unicorn dust? A one of a kind spot well worth a visit to shake up your sushi fix.
