Sitting in the office last Tuesday one of many twitter notifications popped up on screen, this one however caught my attention, another foodie friend had shared an image of their lunch from Asador the previous day. I say lunch but mini feast would be more appropriate!
A phone call later and lunch was on, a bit of a trek for lunch from the Northside but we had it on good authority it would be worth it. Arriving at 2pm it was clear to see there is no issue with filling seats for Asador’s lunch trade, a packed room of busy city folk from the many offices that surround this stylish restaurant.
The whole premise of Asador, which incidentally means barbecue or grill in Spanish, is to use high quality produce and cook it in the most ancient of ways in a huge “Asador” with lump-wood charcoal and oak & apple hard woods to give the food a unique flavour.
The lunch menu is excellent, with plenty of choice and lots of good value dishes from €9.95 such as Morrocan Spiced Lamb Sticks with Tabouleh, BBQ Steak Sandwich or a healthier alternative of Flaked Asador Roasted Salmon Salad. Lunch on this day was about indulgence and a one hour deadline, with that in mind we headed straight for mains.
The special of the day sounded intriguing so had us hooked straight away, when you think of bbq food meat always is at the fore front, believe fish cooked in this way is well worth denying the meat lover in you. A BBQ Gunard; resting on a firm bed of creamy potato gratin with delighful carrot puree, spring vegtables of crunchy long stemmed broccoli, asparagus and a sweet little radish, topped off perfectly with the most exquisite crab butter. This was one of the most enjoyable plates of fish experienced in quite sometime.
My lunch partner settled on a simpler affair a Pulled Pork Sandwich, they say an picture is worth a thousand words, judge for yourself but we think this is one of the most enticing sandwiches you can lay your eyes on. Smokey pieces of pork topped with a luscious red cabbage slaw, mesquite BBQ Sauce and pickled shallot mayo with tasty little straw potatoes to the side. What an enjoyable plate of food for under a tenner!
These two dishes made the promise of not ordering a dessert a distant memory. The Lemon Curd Posset sounded spot on, topped with fresh raspberries, sweet chunks of caramelised brioche all washed down with home made vanilla ice cream. A refreshing finish to a superb lunch.
All in all the bill came to €43.90 including two coffees and left us feeling this was money very well spent.
