Stephen’s Green is generally a pretty reliable spot for good food. Many of the restaurant’s housed here are there ten years plus, no mean feat, especially considering how tough the last few years have been on this industry. They all have one thing is common – consistency. Us Irish are renowned for going back to the same spot over and over again once we love a place. Il Posto is one of those stalwarts that you may have overlooked.
Most people will instantly recognise the the red and black umbrellas that share their terrace, on a sunny day in Dublin it’s hard to beat. However this was not a sunny day in fact it was it was bucketing down, so no al fresco this evening! We popped in on a very busy Saturday night and claimed the last remaining seat. It’s quite the romantic room, intimate lighting, with a high end Italian feel to it.
The one thing we say so often is you can have the best plate of food but if served badly that food is quickly forgotten. The secret to Il Posto’s 12 years in business is pretty evident the second you walk in the front door. The owner/front of house Amanda Jackson has a huge presence in the restaurant. Just like Declan Maxwell previously of Chapter One, Amanda has an enthusiasm and charm that has to be admired, the only difference being she is a very chic blonde.
We ordered a fine bottle of Italian white, a Tenuta San Giorgio, Sauvignon Blanc 2014. Light and delicate which worked wonderfully with the seafood dishes. We started off with the nights’s special Prawns baked in Ricotta mixed with some finely chopped spinach, resting on little grilled polenta beds, an Italian store cupboard staple and a zesty drizzle of lemon juice. A little piece of Italy on a plate, all the ingredients worked well together and helped to create a lofty starter. The second starter was equally as pleasing a Goats Cheese & Red Pepper Tart, an incredibly delicate pastry, filled to the brim and ravaged in minutes.
It would seem rude to dine in such a revered Italian and not sample a pasta dish, “when in Rome” and all that. With that in mind the Lobster and Crab Ravioliwas quickly chosen. Delicious little parcels filled with locally sourced produce delivered from Beshoff’s in Howth that day. Gently dressed in a garlic butter and sage, you could almost taste the Italian coastline. Amanda recommended the Baked Fillet of Cod, cooked with a crunchy basil crust, topped with garlic kale and anchored with a creamy dill sauce, in a word – perfection.
Keeping with the Italian theme we chose to be very bold and opt for the Chocolate and Mascarpone Cream Cake. A slice of pure decadence and oozing with chocolate sauce. One definitely for the recipe book if Head Chef Oscar Holguin will part with it.
Il Posto is one of the few venues offering authentic Italian cuisine at reasonable prices, in an elegant setting with the kind of hospitality that will have people coming back for more for a long time to come.
All in all including the bottle of wine the total came to €106 excluding service.
