An Afternoon Delight in Park Hotel Kenmare – Afternoon Tea Review

Sunday afternoon’s are a funny one when you reach a certain stage in life. Your appreciation for a Sunday roast is still there but you find yourself sometimes wanting a fun afternoon out where alcohol and dense carbs are not the main players in between a bit of sightseeing and shopping. Hello afternoon tea! Those three glorious tiers of treats to refuel and revive. Park Hotel Kenmare was our venue of choice. Amazing grounds to explore and all of the old world charm of this exquisite period hotel.

We enjoyed the Victorian Afternoon Tea €33.95pp, (€42.00 with Prosecco, €47.50 with Champagne). A seriously impressive list of infusions brought out the adventurer in one of us, I went for the Mango & Gunpowerder Tea, but highlighted that my dining companion is a creature of habit, sticking to her trusty Mint Tea. Starting on the bottom tier with Kenmare Smoked Salmon on Brown Bread with Red Onion Chutney, homemade brown bread swathed in wafer thin layers of flavourful Smoked Salmon.  Roast Beef & Horseradish Cream and Egg & Chive Mayonnaise Finger Sandwiches, Open Ham On Brown Bread with Mustard and Apple Chutney. Each one more delicious than its predecessor.

Moving on to the magical middle tier. As something of a scone aficionado, dare I say that this may well be the BEST scone I have ever tasted. These mini scones were warmed through, a super crisp exterior with a buttery, crumbing interior and oh that clotted cream and homemade strawberry jam. Moments like this prove that the simplest of things done right can create lasting food memories. Accompanying this award winning scone was an utterly divine Pistachio Creme filled Profiterole along side a Carrot and Walnut Cake, many wonderful mouthfuls were savoured from this mega middle tier.

The prettiest and most sought after part of any afternoon tea for us is of course the top tier. With our tea replenished for the second time we were ready to dig into these beautiful bites. Raspberry & Chocolate Macaron, always a great flavour combination. A feather light Macaron sandwiched together by a delicioulsy dark chocolate ganache.  A slice of Opera Cake, an elaborate little slab of intensely gorgeous coffee soaked almond sponge layers with chocolate ganache. Lemon Drizzle, so moist and full of zingy zest. Saving the best until last, the Raspberry & White Chocolate Tartlet was a complete joy to behold, Every part of this afternoon tea was faultless but this little tartlet was sensational, white chocolate ganache held within the most buttery pastry case topped with fresh, juicy raspberries. What an wonderful afternoon of tasty bites.

If you are an afternoon tea novice or if you regularly enjoy a dalliance with this decadent treat, we can without any doubt say Park Hotel Kenmare have this down to a fine art. From the time you are seated for Afternoon Tea here you are spoilt both for choice and service. The staff here go out of their way to make sure you enjoy your experience which sees you leaving them with happy thoughts and happy tummies.
