Travelling solo can be a liberating and unforgettable experience: you’ll wander at your own pace, go where you really want to go, truly discover your surroundings and even find or reconnect with yourself. Of course, choosing the right destination for a one person holiday is crucial.
Airbnb’s recently released data shows an increase in bookings for one. The company, a game-changer in the tourism industry, has identified this year’s hottest destinations for individual travellers, using information from single-person bookings in 2016.
The ten cities that registered the biggest increase in solo travelling bookings, all achieving over 100% growth, are Busan, Korea (103%); Charlotte, North Carolina, US (106%); Mexico City, Mexico (109%); Auckland, New Zealand (114%); Sao Paulo, Brazil (128%); Johannesburg, South Africa (135%); Playa del Carmen, Mexico (141%); Cologne, Germany (142%); Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam (146%) and Cancun, Mexico (170%).
Regarding solo travellers’ favourite experiences, Airbnb’s data points out to cooking classes, surfing lessons and crafting workshops.
Certain solo activities are popular in specific destinations, for example, in London, the most-booked solo experience is the Fabulous Fascinators workshop, where people enjoy afternoon tea while learning how to make hats. In Los Angeles, Kitsurf Malibu is a favourite; and the Paella Maestro cookery class is the most popular for “just me” holidaymakers in Barcelona.
