‘Scattering Light’ by Jane Rainey is the latest piece of artwork commissioned by Michelin starred chef Ross Lewis for his restaurant Chapter One, which was recently named Best Restaurant in Ireland by the Restaurant Association of Ireland.
The painting graces the hard back covers of Chapter One’s menus, and is the latest collaboration in the Project Art initiative by this iconic North Dublin City restaurant, which sits next to the Hugh Lane Gallery and close by The Gate Theatre.
The selection process is led by Ross Lewis, initially with the expert guidance of artist Fergus Martin (Aosdana) and more recently, Patrick T. Murphy (RHA).
Project Art was launched in 2011, with the objective of promoting the work of young and emerging Irish artists across a range of mediums, interpreting the connection between art and food.
Over the six years of the initiative, Chapter One has built an impressive collection of art works through bi-annual commissions, coinciding with the spring/summer and autumn/winter seasons.
Every six months, a nominated artist is briefed to create a piece, using any media, expressed as abstract or realism. The resulting artwork is placed in every diner’s hands as the menu cover with the original work displayed in the restaurant.
Menu covers and limited edition prints are also available to purchase, as sought after mementos of a memorable dining experience.
Speaking about the initiative, Ross Lewis commented: “For me it’s a way to showcase the creative connectivity between art, food and the restaurant’s customers.
The parallels between food and art are many. Both require creative thinking and delivery of something that is visually appealing and engaging. We feel it enhances the Chapter One experience, which we strive constantly to do.”
