Avocados at M&S Get a Sharp New Look with Waste Reducing Laser Labels

Avocados at M&S are getting a makeover with their new laser labeling system. Instead of the traditional sticker, the information will now be lasered on to the skin of the avocado.

The move from stickers to laser is set to save ten tonnes of paper and five tonnes of glue per year. It is also designed to be cost-effective and more environmentally friendly.

The new label, which looks like a light tattoo on the skin, will contain the best before date, country of origin and product code. The laser will discolour the first layer of the skin, so it will leave the avocado unharmed and perfectly edible.

Charlotte Curtis, M&S fruit technologist says, “When we first saw the technology in Sweden a couple of years ago I knew we had to get involved”.”We’ve been following it for a while and are so excited to finally be launching it on avocados. Sustainability is at the heart of our business and the laser labelling is a brilliant way for us to reduce packaging and energy use,” he added.

M&S previously tried to use a similar technology on citrus fruit but found the process deteriorated the skin quality. As always, M&S is ahead of the trend in embracing this new technology and the new avocados are set to hit select M&S stores this Thursday.
