Bargain Bubbles Review – Pierre Bonnet Crémant de Loire Brut NV

LabelPierre Bonnet Crémant de Loire Brut NV (12.0%, €11.99, Aldi)

Can bargain bubbles be any good? Monsieur Bonnet says “oui!”

French fizz from outside Champagne is generally known as Crémant. It is produced in several regions, from Alsace and the Jura in the east, Bordeaux in the south west and Limoux in the Languedoc. Crémant is made in exactly the same way as Champagne, with yeast and sugar added to a bottle of still wine to start a second fermentation.

This bottle is from the Loire Valley, where Crémant is generally made from Chardonnay, Chenin Blanc (a local hero white grape) and Cabernet Franc (a local hero black grape). Opened straight from the fridge it tastes crisp and fresh. With a little more time to breathe and warm up, the fruit gets rounder and the wine seems to have a bit more body.

On a warm spring day (we must be due another one soon, surely?) this would make a lovely aperitif or just something to sip while you watch the world go by.
