Beers for Oktoberfest

It’s Oktoberfest time again! This fine tradition started over 200 years ago in Munich as the afters of a wedding, and we Irish think we know how to have the craic. The reason it now starts in late September and finishes in early October is very simple. The weather is generally better and you can stay out in the beer gardens later. Here are three beers from Munich that I recommend trying if you want to have your own Oktoberfest at home.

20150923_215403The first is Augustiner Edelstoff, which isn’t just available at Oktoberfest but I like it a lot. It’s a Helles Lager and I would say it’s the definitive one. It’s bright golden yellow, with a pure white fluffy head, malty and a little sweet. It has a very clean finish. It’s very drinkable. You need to try this one.

20150923_222318Now on to the ‘proper’ Oktoberfest beers. Erdinger Oktoberfest is a Hefeweizen, or wheat beer, that’s a little stronger than their usual at 5.7%. It’s a rich amber colour and has a big foamy head. It has some of the banana flavours you might expect from this style of beer, but they’re not over the top and it finished with some breadiness. Tasty stuff.

20150923_225645Lastly try Hofbrau’s Oktoberfest which is a Marzen or Lager and is golden with a large white head. This one is 6.3% so I don’t know if I’d manage more than a couple of Maß ( one litre glasses ) of this one. It’s largely dominated by a biscuitty malty aroma which carries through to the taste. It’s very pleasant. My only regret was not having pretzels to go with it.

If you want to try these beers without boarding a plane to Munich there is an Oktoberfest event taking place at Custom House Quay in Dublin at the moment where they are pouring Erdinger. The Erdinger is also available from O’Brien’s nationwide. McHugh’s have the Augustiner Edelstoff and Hofbrau’s Oktoberfest. Prost!
