Best Possible Taste Podcast – Pigtown Culture and Food Series

In this week’s Best Possible Taste Podcast, Sharon Noonan has details about the Pigtown Culture and Food Series of events taking place in Limerick City & County during September and October.

The series will focus of Limerick’s unique heritage as a way to showcase the great food available locally and will feature a number of events, including the Culture Night Pig Parade and a panel entitled ‘Beyond the Pig – veganism is a meat eaters world’.

Also included on this special Best Possible Taste Podcast is the BAI funded radio documentary, “Devlins’ Yellowman – A Taste of Childhood”.

This podcast is in celebration of the Lammas Fair, which took place on August 28th and 29th. The Ould Lammas Fair takes place in Ballycastle, Co. Antrim on the last Monday and Tuesday in August.

It’s one of the oldest fairs in Ireland and has been held without interruption for more than three centuries. Within the town, the streets are lined with more than 400 stalls selling a wide variety of goods, from livestock to painted scrolls.

The busiest trade is always at the stalls offering the traditional Lammas treats of Yellow Man, a sticky honeycomb toffee; and Dulse, a reddish sea weed of the variety ‘palmaria palmata’, which has long been eaten and used in medicine by the Irish – especially in the north.
