Brewdog Tasting at Cavern Baggot Street

On a sunny Saturday afternoon in June the patio area of Cavern on Baggot Street played host to a beer tasting from none other than Scottish craft beer trend setters Brewdog. This was another event organised by Irish craft beer distributors Four Corners and if their recent Beavertown tap takeover of Mulligan’s Grocer was to be anything to go by, this promised to be an event not to be missed.

Kerry Allison was our Brewdog host for the day. Being the 11th employee of the company, Kerry has been there throughout it all and is in the perfect position to account for the meteoric rise to success for the Scottish homebrew poster boys of success. Now the global brand ambassador for the company, Kerry’s position sees her travel the world to talk beer. Her wealth of knowledge on the subject is phenomenal, having achieved the level of cicerone and beer sommelier over the years under the encouragement of her employers.

Punk IPA was the first beer upon arrival, the flagship beer a fitting opener. A quick show of hands around the group indicated that all present were very familiar with the fruity IPA already. Charcuterie boards were brought out for us to enjoy while a minor technical difficulty was resolved with the speakers and the tasting proceeded as planned.

Proceed it did, at a good pace with just the right amount of history, anecdotes and beer geek info between each beer. With attendants on hand to ensure your glass was freshly rinsed and filled right away, there was little need to break concentration from the presentation other than to steal another piece of cheese.

There was a nice variety from the Brewdog range on the schedule for the day with session beer Dead Pony Club, the grapefruit infused Elvis Juice, the ruthless Jack Hammer IPA and, closing out the tasting, was the palette destroying Abstrackt AB20, a tiramisu imperial stout that was too sweet for some taste buds.

The star of the show for most on the day was Brewdog’s most recent milk stout: Jet Black Heart. Although they may have rubbed a few guests up the wrong way by openly mocking the iconic Guinness adverts of the late 90s/early 00s, the smooth and roasted oatmeal flavour of this super stout more than made up for it.

With the addition of a particular four year old mature Gouda cheese from Sheridan’s Cheesemongers gracing the charcuterie board and the sun peeking though the clouds to dance around the patio area, it was hard to find much reason to vacate after the afternoon’s proceedings.

This was not a problem as both Kerry and Amy from Four Corners were happy to stick around and chat beer with those punters who chose to remain. They were even encouraged to pop upstairs to Baggot Street Wines and bring some Brewdog beers down to keep the festivities alive.

All in all, another fine display from Four Corners and an incredibly enjoyable, entertaining and informative afternoon from Brewdog and Kerry in particular. It’s hard to think of better ways to spend the few and far between sunny afternoons of an Irish summer.
