TheTaste Teams Up With Wines of Beaujolais to Celebrate Beaujolais Week 2018

Beaujolais is having a moment here in Ireland. Last year by volume, Ireland saw a sales increase of Beaujolais of just over 76.3%, with value growth at an impressive 95.3%; the largest growth of any French region. This was largely fuelled by an interest in the Crus, with growth at 107% by volume and 123.7% by value, solidifying Beaujolais’ place in the market as a fine wine region.

John Wilson, of the Irish Times, commented, “For the last five years, the Irish consumer has been looking for wines that are lower in alcohol, with fresh fruit and good acidity. Beaujolais fits this need perfectly, offering character, complexity and genuine terroir. It also offers fantastic value for money, from simple Beaujolais to the great Crus, when compared to any of its rivals. I can see this growth continuing for the next few years, as consumers realise that Beaujolais is one of the most food-friendly wines of all.”

The superb 2015 vintage has arguably driven sales. 2017 saw majority of shelves filled with 2015s, a vintage that has been described as “outstanding” by Decanter and World of Fine Wine’s Andrew Jefford. Jancisrobinson.com’s Julia Harding MW, saw a slight variation to the classical Beaujolais style, musing, “wines (were) a little less distinctively Beaujolais’ but ‘likely to please wine drinkers who like a little more generosity and roundness in their red wines.”

Seeing a slightly “bigger” version of Beaujolais has aided as a gateway from fuller bodied wines such as Malbec and Grenache. It is also likely that this has given those who sell Beaujolais more confidence to recommend it over these popular wine styles. More and more, people are seeing just how food friendly and flexible Gamay is, not forgetting the small percentage of mineral, fruit driven, and slightly creamy whites.
