Centra Announces Over 65s Have the Healthiest Diet

Centra has revealed that those over 65 are getting more of their 5 a day than anyone else. They are consuming more fruit and veg than their counterparts in the 18-24 bracket, who are eating the least.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, 42 of parents have admitted in the survey carried out by RedC that they struggle to get their children to eat vegetables with many saying they bribe them and hide fruit and veg in their food.

A positive result from the research shows an improvement in the average adult fruit and veg intake in Ireland which has risen from 2.5 portions to 3.3 portions a day.

The figures are a positive result for Centra who launched their 5 a Day campaign in January, encouraging the nation to get more fruit and veg into their diet.

Following from the success of that campaign, Centra have just launched a new initiative ‘Get Summer Ready’ with consultant dietician Sarah Keogh. Together they are going to be providing recipes, tips and tricks to keep pushing the Irish nation toward a healthier diet and lifestyle.

Speaking about the findings Sarah Keogh, Consultant Dietician with Eatwell.ie and a member of the Irish Nutrition and Dietetic Institute, said: “It is worrying that 77% of the Irish nation consume less than the recommended 5 a day, with young adults eating the least amounts of fruit and veg. I have drawn up tips and recipes that are easy to follow, which will help people to get more of their 5 a day – especially those who are time strapped and lead busy lives or trying to get their children to ‘eat their greens’!
