Diageo’s new Consumer Information Standards, into force since last Friday 1st of July, will apply to all its brands and include a more detailed labeling which includes the alcohol content and nutritional information of packed alcohol drinks.
Johnnie Walker Red Label Scotch Whisky is the first brand to go through the make-up, and the company expects to begin shipping the product with the packaging update in the beginning of fall 2016. Smithwick’s is also on the list of early updates, and the new cans will be seen on Irish shelves this month. Early next year, Guinness will follow, as well as Johnnie Walker Black Label, Double Black, Gold Label Reserve, Platinum and Green Label.
The decision to include this information took into consideration extensive research by Diageo on consumer demands and expectations. A general desire for less but clearer information was observed across international markets. Sugar content, allergens and standard drink size were also among the bits on information that consumers deemed worth keeping on the label.
Regarding this measure, Ivan Menezes, Chief Executive of Diageo, said “We believe people should have the best possible information to make informed choices about what they drink: this includes alcohol content and nutritional information per typical serve. Johnnie Walker is one of our largest global brands, which means these new labels will arm millions of people around the world with clear information about what’s in their glass and in a way they can understand at a glance.”
