Francis Street is Getting a €25 Million Revamp Including Restaurants and an Arts Centre

The Liberties’ Francis Street is getting a €25 million investment that will translate in a major makeover to the area. The street, already filled with local businesses, will see the old Tivoli Theatre being demolished and rebuilt into a modern cultural arts centre. A civic square will be developed in its surrounding area. Currently named “Tivoli Square” this is set to be the centre around which the construction will focus.

The plans, were recently given approval by An Bord Pleanála, and will cover a 10,000 sq m. Among the new additions to the area, there are plans for a 260 room aparthotel complex, a gym, and a number of restaurant units.

The development is in the hands of Douglas Wallace Architects, who are also looking after other urban improvement projects on neighbouring Cork Street and Central Quay.

As reported by the Irish Times, founder of the Tivoli Theatre Andy Byrne is promoting this project. It is expected that this new cultural square will allow outdoor cultural events such as concerts or film screenings, in a similar fashion to Temple Bar’s Meeting House Square.

The newspaper also reported that the project will respect the historic heritage of the street, preserving the brick facade at 140-143, which traces back to the 19th century.

The refreshment  is expected to attract more visitors to Francis Street, an often overlooked area which neighbours a number of major tourism attractions such as St Patrick’s Cathedral and the Teeling Distillery.
