Last year, actor and director George Clooney made headlines when he sold his tequila brand Casamigos to Diageo for $1 billion. Now he’s determined to return to the spirits world with a mezcal. Partnering up again with businessman Rande Gerber, George Clooney mezcal will be under the Casamigos portfolio and is to be released on several markets on the 1st of April 2018.
The United States, UK and Australia are some of the countries in which Casamigos Mezcal will be launched initially. The premium agave spirit, a traditional Mexican speciality, will come in visually striking 750 ml bottles matte grey coloured and finished in an oven for a distinctive look and texture. The bottles will be priced $60.
Casamigos Mezcal is a “joven” expression (young), made from 100% Espadín agave from the Mexican region of Santiago Matatlán in Oaxaca.
Rande Gerber told Forbes that while the team behind the brand initially focused on getting their tequila right, they were “given mezcals to try a few years ago and there was one we really loved.”
He adds that “at the time, all of our attention was focused on sharing Casamigos tequila with the world but we stayed in touch with the family that created that mezcal and knew one day it would become part of our Casamigos family.”
It is expected that the Casamigos Mezcal range expands with older expressions in the future.
