Gin Was the Fastest-Growing Spirit in Ireland in 2016

You’ve seen them in almost every bar: groups sipping on glossy Gin & Tonics as the drink has experienced a new lease on life and it’s far from the boring tipple of decades past. Ireland’s rediscovered love for the juniper spirit has become major and according to a recent report by the the Irish Spirits Association (ISA), gin was the country’s fastest-growing spirit in 2016.

As a communicated by the organisation points out “figures suggest that gin has grown by 31.6% year-on-year, in on-trade value to reach €74 million.” While domestic consumption is strong, ISA notes that “2017 may see a significant and unprecedented increase in exports of gin from Ireland.”

This growth motivated the creation of a group of Irish gin producers, announced last August and organised to provide a voice for the sector.

On the group’s inaugural meeting, producers agreed supporting the creation of a legally-recognised standard for Irish Gin was top priority.  The Managing Director of The Shed Distillery, Pat Rigney, was elected chair of the group.

With over 30 Irish gin brands on the market, innovation has been identified as a key factor in the continuity of this growth.

The Irish Spirits Association (ISA) is a part of the Alcohol Beverage Federation of Ireland, a trade association representing brewers, distillers, brand owners and distributors in the country, which is part of the Irish Business and Employers Confederation (IBEC), one of the country’s most active business organisations.
