High Spirits That Go Beyond The Top Shelf – Cunningham’s Bar Kildare Town Review

Located in the landlocked county of Kildare, Cunningham’s is one watering hole that will not only solve any thirst quenching requirements you may have but also leave you with a very happy belly. Saloon style wooden doors, walls adorned with vintage photos and signs, sturdy wooden tables and chairs that have seen many a lively session beckon you to sit and sip.

We were warmly greeted by a lively bar man who took our drinks order and offered us some menus while telling us the daily special was a “Leg of Salmon”, this is a bar where high spirits are in abundance and not just on the top shelf!

A pint of Guinness & a glass of Sauvignon Blanc while we scanned the menu proved the perfect little appetite enhancers….not that we ever need much help! And with very enticing prices, the pint €4.50 and the glass of wine €5.75, a second was inevitable.

Cunningham’s menu is a unique offering of Irish and authentic Thai dishes. From Spring Rolls to Seafood Chowder and Rib Eye to Thai Curries, this is not the kind of pub grub usually on offer in country bars which was a very welcome surprise. Settling on Half Crispy Duck €17.50 and Thai Red Chicken Curry €13.50

This is quite possibly the crispiest duck we have ever tasted, this combined with the sweet aromatic flavours of the tamarind jus makes for one seriously lipsmacking meal. A solid recommended side of noodles was the ideal accompaniment. This was a belly busting feed packed with flavour that has most definitely secured a return visit from us.

Our second dish of Thai Red Chicken Curry with Fried Rice was an absolute flavour bomb. Clearly there is a skill to balancing heat with flavour in dishes like this and the Chef here in Cunningham’s holds that skill in spades. Tender chunks of chicken & lightly cooked veg swim in a pool of utterly delicious fragrant red curry sauce, complete with a side of fried rice this is another stand out dish that will see us return.

Cunningham’s have perfected the balance of a warm welcoming traditional Irish pub with expertly prepared fresh food that is served in very generous portions. The next time you are passing through Kildare town mark this little gem on the map and make sure to pay them a visit. Tell them TheTaste.ie sent you!
