Hotel room keys could become a thing of the past in the near future, thanks to the Hilton Hotel chain unveiling new “mobile-enabled room key technology”.
So basically, hotel guests may soon be able to unlock their room with an app on their mobile phone.
Ten Hilton hotels in the UK will be the first to experience this new feature by the end of 2017.
The app activates the day before you arrive at your chosen hotel and once your room is ready, you’ll receive a notification to pass by the front desk – something which is really useful for those who hate the whole check-in process.
As you approach your room, you can press the “unlock” button on the app. While this seems like a terribly futuristic invention, 1,700 hotels around the world are already using this feature.
Perhaps this feature will also be available in the new 202-room hotel, which is set to open in the Blackpitts area of the Liberties in the spring of 2018.
The hotel, which will operate under the Aloft Hotel brand, will target tech savvy travellers and will allow guests to use smartphones or Apple watches as room keys.
According to Aloft Hotels, guests can expect to “receive a text with your room number, so you can skip the check-in line and head straight to your room, unlocking the door with the wave of a smart phone.”
We better keep our phones charged if we’ll be using them as keys in future!
