The Importance of Being Posh: Irish Duo Opened Stunning Oscar Wilde Themed Bar in New York

Oscar Wilde sparks a fascination that transcends literature. The author has inspired numerous bars across the globe, and cities like London and Berlin already have a venue named after him. Now New York has welcomed a bar that channels the spirit of the legendary playwright, Oscar Wilde NYC, on 45 West 27th Street.

The bar is the latest opening by Irish duo Frank McCole and Tommy Burke, who are also behind the equally stylish Lillie’s Victorian Establishment. Oscar Wilde NYC offers a spacious and sophisticated venue of Victorian elegance, with plenty of polished wood and antiques decorating the large dining area.

The building stands since 1909 and was designed by Henry T. J. Fuehrman, and since the end of Prohibition, it was occupied by a slew of novelty and apparel firms until now. At 36.11 metres (118.5 feet), it claims to be the city’s longest bar and it features numerous exquisite ornaments including a French fireplace, marble surfaces, original wood paneling, chandeliers and 26 antique clocks, all set to 1:50, the time of Oscar Wilde’s death.

According to the New York Times, owners Frank McCole and Tommy Burke are Irish immigrants who arrived to the city in the eighties. McCole, who described himself as a fan of Oscar Wilde since childhood, said it was only natural to honor the Irish artist. To exalt him further, there are two new bronze statues of Wilde in the place, one features him with a pint of Guinness.

“Coming from County Mayo and County Monaghan in Ireland, we grew up reading Oscar Wilde and studying his literature. We want the bar to celebrate his legacy and become an inclusive destination for all.” Burke and McCole commented in a press release.
