Mother’s Day Wines

Mother’s Day is on Sunday 6th March this year, a day that, in addition to a mountain of cards and chocolate, a glass of wine and a reminisce with Mum can be expected. Below is a selection of wines to best suit the occasion: some serious, some easy-drinking, some sparkling, but all delicious.

Bollinger Rose╠üBOLLINGER ROSÉ

When all the stops are being pulled out, then look no further than Bollinger Rosé.

Bollinger are proud of, and famous for, their Pinot Noir, using a substantial proportion of it in all of their Champagnes which gives them that distinctive Bollinger body and character.

It was only time, then, that they would take this to the next logical step and allow the Pinot to ‘show its colours’, so in 2008 Bollinger Rosé was born.

What’s not to like about the Bolly Rosé? Dry, powerful and very serious indeed, this highly polished wine combines notes of plum, pastry, cinnamon and spice.

With structure, weight and harmony of vibrant flavours right across the palate, this is a delicious accompaniment that can match a variety of dishes like shellfish, Japanese, the milder Chinese and Thai dishes, as well as red fruit-based desserts.

RSP €85 from O’Brien’s Wines, nationwide; Next Door off-licences nationwide; Mitchell & Sons, Dublin; Fresh Supermarkets, Dublin: Joyces of Galway; Ardkeen Superstores, Waterford; and other good independents nationwide.
SUTTER HOME WHITE ZINFANDEL

Sutter Home pioneered ‘White Zinfandel’ back in 1971, a style which was truly revolutionary at the time, and though it now has many imitators it has never since been equalled.

The Sutter Home White Zinfandel is one of the most popular and accessible White Zinfandels here in Ireland: light and refreshing, it has notes of strawberry and melon with a medium-sweet finish, not to mention looking great in the glass too.

And if you’re planning a Mother’s Day dinner that’s a bit more exotic than usual, it is this slightly sweet aspect of the wine that makes Sutter Home White Zinfandel so good with spicy food without aggravating the heat, such as Asian, Thai, Spanish – think chorizo and patas bravas – as well as the less creamy Indian dishes such as tandoori for example.

RSP €10.99 and very widely available in supermarkets and off-licences
MATEUS SPARKLING BRUT ROSÉ

The fully sparkling version of the much-loved and historic Mateus Rosé, the Mateus Sparkling Brut Rosé is refined and crisp with floral nuances and pleasing aromas of apples, pears and raspberries. Subtle notes of toasted bread interplay with a fresh and lively acidity and a gorgeously creamy mousse.

Fun and easy-going, the Mateus Sparkling Brut Rosé is the perfect accompaniment to an evening spend chatting and catching up with family, friends and – yes – Mums too.

RSP: €19.49 from Castle Off-Licence, Tralee, Kerry; The Goose Off-Licence, Drumcondra, Dublin; Savages of Swords, Dublin; Boomers of Clondalkin, Dublin; Mace of Caherdavin, Limerick; and other good independents nationwide
MIGUEL TORRES CHILE, SANTA DIGNA CABERNET SAUVIGNON ROSÉ

The Chilean outpost of the famous Catalan winemaking family of Torres produces this richer-style rosé (or rosado in Spanish) at a fantastic price.

Expect blackcurrant, of course, but also some cranberry and redcurrant that only Pacific Cabernet Sauvignon rosés can offer.

Delicious with cured sausages, meat pies and many pasta dishes … and, remarkably, it’s even perfect with notoriously difficult sweet-and-sour Chinese dishes.

Graham Beck Vintage Brut RoseGRAHAM BECK VINTAGE SPARKLING ROSÉ

Graham Beck is famous for their sparkling wines, with the company’s efforts often being held up as the very definition of the Methode Cap Classique, South Africa’s version of the traditional Champagne method.

Their regular Graham Beck Brut has been enjoyed by Nelson Mandela, Barak Obama, Prince Harry and Bono, amongst many others, and here they apply the same care and attention to a single-vintage rosé.

Savour the light yeasty aromas, good freshness on the nose and rich, creamy complexity on the palate, while a fine mousse and great length of flavour round off this blushing stunner.

Delicate and delightfully demure, yet complex and richly rewarding – this vintage Brut Rosé ticks all the boxes for serious bubbly connoisseurs.

RSP €29.99 from Mitchell & Sons, Dublin; The Corkscrew, Dublin; WineOnline.ie; and other good independent off-licences nationwide
