Old Post Office New Sichuan restaurant – now open in Blackrock

Following a lavish €1.6m refurbishment, the landmark Old Post Office on Blackrock Main Street now houses a new restaurant of the same name. Old Post Office will serve the finest Chinese Sichuan cuisine in a European fine dining style and setting, opening tonight, Tuesday 21st May.

The authentic Sichuan menu will be executed by team of 4 main chefs led by Head Chef Yu Shuchen, recruited from the province by two Chinese business partners. Managed by hospitality veteran and consultant, Paul Malone, Old Post Office will strive to balance authenticity of flavour with thoughtful sourcing of Irish and organic ingredients.

With A La Carte available at lunch and dinner, the focus at Old Post Office is on tasting menus. From €45 at lunch, to a choice of €70, €90 or the premium €120 for dinner, which starts with a glass of Bollinger before offering two starters, hot & sour soup, four main courses with vegetables and rice or noodles, and a chef’s selection plate for dessert.

On the Dinner A La Carte menu, starter prices range from €12 for Dumplings Shui Jiao to €28 for a ½ Skeganhore Peking Duck to share. Main courses range from €22 for Vegetable Chow Mein to €38 for Seared Irish King Scallops to €42 for Fillet of Hereford Beef.

Signature dishes will include Hot & Sour Soup with minced cornfed chicken, soya bean, Chinese mushroom and crispy rice noodles, Sichuan Spiced Steamed Whole Black Sole with ginger and scallion, Marinated Seatrout in Black Bean Sauce and Ashbourne French Trim Lamb Chops with cumin, coriander and chilli. While the extensive drinks menu includes over 50 wines, including bio-dynamic varieties, with cocktails, craft beers and Chinese liqueurs. (Full Menus in Dropbox)

The traditional stone façade now fronts a series of light airy spaces from the bar to informal dining, leading through to the formal dining room at the rear featuring a floor to ceiling glass wall and terraces, making the most of the views out over Dublin Bay. Interior designers, the DJI Group, have chosen a palette of pale aqua greens and duck egg blues for the wall coverings, wood panelling and velvet covered dining chairs. The table settings are formal yet echo the light airy feel with heavy white linen, linen napkins, premium glassware and delicate textured crockery edged with gold.

There are nods to both cultures throughout Old Post Office. The walls feature commissioned painting of local scenes by artist Willy Redmond, adding vibrancy and colour, while the carpet features an abstract Asian floral pattern with finest quality Chinese sculptures and vases dotted throughout.
