Osta Café and Wine Bar in Sligo Has Been Awarded Just Ask Restaurant of The Month

There’s some great news for Sligo as Osta Café and Wine Bar has been awarded Bord Bia’s Just Ask Restaurant of the Month for December.

A delightful spot for tea, coffee or something more substantial, Osta Cafe is run by Brid Torrades, a leading advocate for better food and well-known for her keen support of local organic food and small food producers.

Commenting on the win, Brid said: “We would like to thank all of our suppliers for their support in delivering such excellent quality produce. We are always delighted to find new producers to supply both our cafe and retail area. Clarke’s Butchers supply us with ham, which we roast and, along with Sheerins, they also supply our breakfast meats.

“Ronan Byrne, the Friendly Farmer, supplies our pasture-fed chicken and our seafood comes from a range of suppliers including Gerry Blaine, Clarkes of Ballina for their organic smoked salmon and Sean Flynn for their delicious smoked mackerel and naturally smoked haddock. We source wild Irish tuna from Shines in Killybegs, Co. Donegal and free range and organic eggs from both Thomas O’Donovan of Ballysadare Eggs and Mary Luthers of Bluebell Farm.”

She added: “Rod Alston of Eden Plants, Volmar Klohn of Crimlin Farm, Aidan Gillen and The Organic Centre supply us with our organic and seasonal vegetables and Le Fournil bakery on Tobergal Lane supply us with their freshly baked French breads from Tuesday to Saturday.

“Dozios of Mayo make Zing and Ella cheeses that feature on our menu and we use sea vegetables collected by Seashoreveg in both our sweet and savoury dishes. We’re also delighted to introduce our new coffee roaster – family run business, Bean West from Westport.”

Georgina Campbell also said: “Aside from its delightful location, accessibly priced quality food and a genuine local flavour is what makes Osta stand out. Brid’s enthusiasm for seeking out and championing the best local produce remains undimmed. Currently in its eighth year, the Just Ask campaign has been wholeheartedly embraced by the restaurant trade. The campaign encourages diners to look for information on where food on their plate comes from and encourages chefs to profile their local suppliers on menus.
