Irish Entrepreneur Dr. Pearse Lyons, Alltech Founder and President, Passes Away

Irish entrepreneur, innovator and scientist Dr. Pearse Lyons, who founded and who was the president of Alltech, died at the age of 73 on the 8th of March 2018. The Dundalk native emigrated to the United States with his family in the late 70’s, with a vision that revolutionised the agriculture industry.

Nowadays, the company that he founded, Alltech, has a global team of over 5,000 people and continues to focus on his original mission of improving animal, crop and human health and performance through innovative use of yeast fermentation, enzyme technology, algae and nutrigenomics.

In 2017, Pearse and his wife Deirdre realised their dream of opening a distillery in Dublin after restoring the long-abandoned St. James’ Church in The Liberties district of the city. The location for the Pearse Lyons Distillery was made even more meaningful after they discovered that members of Pearse’s family including his great-grandfather were buried in the churchyard.

As noted on a communicated issued by Alltech, funeral masses will be held in Lexington, Kentucky, USA, on March 17 and in Dublin, Ireland, in April. A special celebration of life will be held on May 20 at the beginning of ONE: The Alltech Ideas Conference in Lexington. He died due to an acute lung condition which developed while he was recovering from a routine heart surgery he had last November.

“Dr. Lyons was widely recognized for his contributions to science and industry and was awarded honorary doctorates from many colleges and universities around the world”, reads the release, which mentions accolades such as the prestigious Ireland-U.S. Council Award for Outstanding Achievement and the St. Patrick’s Day Science Medal.

In lieu of flowers, the family has encouraged donations to the Alltech ACE Foundation, a nonprofit organization that funds philanthropic endeavours of varied kinds, from disaster relief to primary schools in Haiti.
