Rascals Brewing All Night Long Session Pale Ale – Craft Beer Review

Lionel Ritchie’s song names this limited edition craft beer made by award winning Rascals Brewing Co. in partnership with Molloys Liquor Stores and sold exclusively at their shops. Launched just in time for the UEFA Euro 2016 and with a football-inspired packaging to match the occasion and show support to the green, white and orange, this is a refreshing session ale, light but flavourful enough to keep one going way after the games’ 90 minutes are done.

Session beers are low in alcohol by definition: created to be enjoyed through a lengthy jam, they usually range between 3 and 5% ABV, allowing those enjoying them to do so All Night Long without having to be sent to the bench early.

The hop varieties used in its brewing are Cascade, Yellow Sub, El Dorado and Hull Melon. Even without being familiar with the peculiarities of each type, their glistening names foresee what the nose and palate will get once the can is opened.

This particular one is bright amber coloured, mildly translucent and with a joyful fizziness that helps aromas of honeydew melon and tropical fruit reach your nose faster. With a 4,2% ABV, it’s light bodied and thirst-quenching, ideal with football friendly snacking (did anyone say nachos, crisps or chicken wings?).

On the palate, the melon notes go on, and mango, tangerine and peaches complete the band of fruits. As in a tropical dessert, drops on honey can be tasted along and a hint of toasted cereal closes the gig.

Virtually no bitterness and a mild acidity make of this session pale ale a match-watching companion that will have you secretly hoping for extra time.

All Night Long Session Pale Ale by Rascals Brewing is available only at Molloys Liquor Stores while stocks last (€2.75 per 33cl can or 5 cans for €10).
