Ryanair Axes Second Free Carry-on Policy in New Baggage Policy Overhaul

As part of its “always getting better” programme Ryanair has announced that it will axe its second free bag policy, just one of several changes to the airline’s bag policy that will reportedly cost the airline more than €50 million per year in reduced checked bag fees.

Due to “boarding and flight delays” from November 1st all non-priority customers will be asked to check their second bag free of charge at the boarding gate.

Only priority boarding customers, who pay an additional €5 for the privilege, will be permitted to bring two carry-on bags on the aircraft.

At the moment passengers are allowed carry one cabin bag, usually a bags with wheels or anything bigger than 10kg, along with an additional small bag, such as a backpack or shopping bag for free.

The airline announced yesterday the changes were dut to “too many customers are availing of Ryanair’s two free carry-on bags service, and with high load factors, there is not enough overhead cabin space for this volume of carry-on bags”

It’s not all bad news however, the airline has increased check-in bag sizes from 15kg to 20kg and reduced the standard check-in bag fee from €35 to €25 for a 20kg bag.

This move is “to encourage more customers to check in bags and reduce the number of customers with two bags at the boarding gates”.

Speaking on the new scheme Ryanair spokesperson Kenny Jacobs said: “We believe offering bigger bags at reduced fees will encourage more customers to consider checking-in a bag, which will reduce the high volume of customers we have with two carry-on bags at the boarding gates, which is causing flight delays due to large numbers of gate bag and cabin bag offloads,” Jacobs said.
