Talented in the Art of Great Coffee – Coppa Café, RHA Gallery, Review

A few steps away from the greenery of St. Stephen’s Green is Coppa Café. Located on the ground floor of the RHA Gallery in Ely Place, the compact café is nestled in a space that is elegant and sophisticated, but not intimidatingly so, achieving at the same time a friendly and upbeat atmosphere.

Open until 5pm, seven days a week, Coppa Café tends to get pretty busy around lunchtime. For a quiet cup of joe or a peaceful slice of pie, it’s best to drop by before noon or once the lunch rush subsides after 2pm.

Having visited the cafe over a year ago I was pleased to revisit this coffee and food nook and delve into their menu once again.

As it was a muggy August day, I craved something on the lighter side and decided on the salmon on sourdough bread. It fit the bill perfectly –  a light and refreshing dish, the perfect treat in humid weather.

Sprinkled with olive oil and sesame seeds, a generous heap of smoked salmon arrived on a bed of spinach, beetroot and cucumber. Horseradish-spiked yoghurt was lightly spread on the sourdough, giving the whole sandwich a nice zing.

The sandwich was accompanied by a rocket salad, sprinkled with a rich mixture of balsamic vinegar, mustard and olive oil, a combination that might be a tad intense for some.

Since my last visit the café’s beans of choice has not changed, still favouring Cork based speciality roaster Badger & Dodo. This time around I tried their Blackwater blend of four different Arabica beans.

Thanks to its chocolatey notes, this coffee was on the sweet side and my latte boasted a pleasant and soft mouthfeel, the Blackwater marrying well with milk’s natural smoothness.

To satisfy my sweet tooth, I ordered a slice of moist banana bread laden with chunks of fruit and a bite-site berry friand, the zestiness of the which balanced well the sweetness of almonds and paired especially nicely with my latte.

The guys at Coppa Café offer a pastry and coffee special for €3.50 from 8am to 11am daily, which I advise you to strategical use for some Monday morning motivation – who says you can’t buy happiness?

Overall, Coppa Café offers a great variety of sweet and savoury options for food lovers, with their fare rooted in simplicity and prepared with care and love and I’ll be back again, this time sooner rather than later.
