South African journalists get a taste of Ireland with celebrated chef Darina Allen

Ireland’s world-class cuisine was highlighted in South Africa recently, when legendary chef Darina Allen attended an event in Cape Town hosted by Tourism Ireland and Irish Ambassador Liam MacGabhann.

Tourism Ireland invited influential food and lifestyle journalists, including representatives of the Sunday Times (South Africa), SAfm radio and Woolworths Taste magazine, to come and meet Darina Allen and sample Irish cuisine at the event.

Darina Allen was visiting South Africa as the guest speaker at the annual “One & Only Reaching for Young Stars” chef schools competition in Cape Town.

Katharyn Williams-Jaftha, Tourism Ireland South Africa, said: “The island of Ireland is becoming increasingly well-known for the quality of its food, with a reputation for natural products used in both traditional and innovative ways. Food is such an important element of the holiday experience, with people becoming more and more discerning about what they eat. The fact that it is possible to enjoy excellent cuisine, and enjoy the rich culture and heritage of the island of Ireland, very much appeals to South African travellers – so it makes sense for us to highlight Ireland as a superb food tourism destination.”
