Sunday Roast Feast at Fire Restaurant

What better to spend a lazy Sunday with family than with a Sunday roast, right ? With that in mind we gathered up the brood, all three of them and decided to head in to Fire Restaurant on Dawson St. for their family friendly Sunday lunch. Fire may not be the first destination to spring to mind for a dinner with the kids, as most people are probably unaware how just how child friendly it is. We all have that one fussy eater, but the children’s menu here is superb. Lots of choice fresh and healthy for the kids, big and small and they can even eat from the sharing board for no extra cost. Let’s be honest if the kids are happy, the parents are happy.

We arrived and whilst waiting for our table in the bar, the kids had some juices and freshly made popcorn (which they loved !) and we relaxed with a glass of wine. The bar itself overlooks the beautiful landscaped gardens and is strikingly contemporary for a building dating from 1864. We were fortunate enough to be seated near the kitchen pass, which is great for keeping the little ones occupied, especially the impressive wood fired oven. The kids can see first hand how the dish is prepared and plated. Having not dined in Fire with the kids before we were surprised to see so many families present. The restaurant is ideal for families, especially large ones as the room is airy and spacious and and the staff are relaxed and friendly and really engage with the kids.

There are several options available for Sunday Lunch, the sharing plate of a full Sunday roast with the Hereford Iirsh prime beef is the most popular and excellent value at €29.95pp with all the trimmings included. We settled on a selection of a few different dishes. The kids started off with some freshly baked Garlic Flatbreads, which are lightly sprinkled with cheese . The Wood Fired Crab Claws sounded delicious so we both settled on them for our starters. If you are a lover of crab you need to try this dish as the flavours will blow you away. The claws are basted in a garlic butter and served with pickled cucumber and a sublime gazpacho dip.

For mains the kids mixed it up and went for Roast Chicken Fillet with gravy and chunky chips and the Meatball Penne Pasta. Once you see clean plates with kids you know you’re on to a winner! At €12 for two courses or €15 for three good value for the quality of fresh produce on offer. The thing we really liked about Fire is the tables are very large and encourage you to share from the many sides on offer, kids love to try a little bit of everything. For our mains I had to try the Spatchcock Chicken as it looked delicious coming out of the kitchen. Glazed with honey and prickly ash and slow cooked to reveal a moist delicious feast. Himself went for the 8oz Irish Hereford Prime Sirloin Steak, juicy and a good bite to the strip of fat. Both dishes are accompanied with a selection of creamy mash, dripping roast potatoes, of which the kids devoured most of and a savoury fresh herb stuffing loaf. As if that wasn’t enough a generous selection of seasonal veg is also included, carrots, parsnip, long stemmed broccoli and mangetout. The great thing about Fire is the unsparing portions and the fact you can take away any leftovers for later which the guys will gladly wrap up for you.

At this stage our eldest Jake had devoured most of everyone’s dinner so he decided to skip dessert and the other two both got Cookies and Ice-Cream. You can select what flavour ice cream you’d prefer between you mountainous cookie sandwich.  This dessert gets a big thumbs up from the kids, what child doesn’t love cookies especially giant ones, covered in strawberry syrup and hundreds and thousands! We kept it simple and shared a Iced Praline Parfait with cherry gel, crushed caramel and chocolate sauce, topped with a crunchy gingerbread biscuit.

Overall the total came to €127.99 including two coffees and two glasses of St Clair’s Sauvignon Blanc. Excellent value and a fab family day out which both kids and parents will love.

This is a Family Taste we would highly recommend.
