SuperValu French Wine Sale Is Now On, Nationwide Until September 26th.

France is the second largest producer of wine in the world, producing up to 8 billion bottles per year. SuperValu sold an impressive 2.5 million of those bottles in the last 12 months in Ireland, proving that the home of Languedoc, Bordeaux and Burgundy still dominates wine consumption in Ireland.

In curating the wines for the French Wine Sale, SuperValu wine buyer Kevin O’Callaghan has considered wines that will excite all tastes, from the novice to the most experienced wine lover. As part of the sale, SuperValu will also introduce 12 Special Guest Wines for a limited run for the duration of the sale. These wines will offer amazing value across all price points with customers able to explore the different French regions at prices ranging from €8-€50 and all in between.

Speaking about the sale, Kevin O’Callaghan said “I am delighted to reveal the line- up for the SuperValu French Wine Sale, and especially to introduce 12 amazing Special Guest Wines which will be joining our range for this limited time. There truly is something for all tastes and all budgets, with the Special Guest Wines starting from €8. I love seeing our customers’ reactions as they discover new and exciting bottles that wouldn’t normally be found on Irish shelves.”

The 12 Special Guest Wines that will be available in SuperValu for a limited time during the French Wine Sale are:

Mercurey Les Doués 2017 Château du Cray, a typical Chardonnay gold that varies in its degree of paleness and is flecked with green. It boasts aromas of white flowers (mayflower, acacia), hazelnut, almond, and spices (cinnamon, pepper). (Sale price: €15)

Moulin à Vent, is red with hints of blackberry. A complex nose with notes of black fruits and subtle notes of red fruits, but also notes of flowers and spicy notes. (Sale price: €12)

Mégalithe Sancerre, after a gentle pressing, 40% of the must is fermented in new 300 litre oak barrels from Allier. The wine stays in barrel for 8 to 9 months and the lees are stirred regularly to give the wine weight and complexity. To preserve the character of the Sauvignon, the other 60% of the must is vinified and matured with particular care in steel vats. (Sale price: €22)

Domaine Laffitte Sauvignon Blanc, an elegant and mineral wine. Its intense nose develops aromas of citrus while the mouth, which is very wide and subtle in the attack, develops a good length and a tangy finish. To be enjoyed with fresh seafood or fish. (Sale price: €8)

Domaine Laffitte Rosé, an elegant bright colour wine which offers a bouquet of red berries, strawberries and notes of citrus. The delicate mouth is soft and fruity and the finish very refreshing. To be enjoyed as an aperitif, with Italian food or summer salads. (Sale price: €8)

Domaine Laffitte Malbec, a bright ruby colour. On the nose, cherry and spicy flavours can be detected and the mouth is subtle with a nice roundness. The tannins are very silky with a finish dominated by the fruits. To be enjoyed with white or red meat for lunch and dinner. (Sale price: €8)

Cremant de Bourgogne Simonnet-Febvre, a harmoniously balanced wine with fine bubbles, a persistent foam and a wonderful length in the mouth. It is fresh and powerful on the nose with aromas of citrus. Drink this crémant as a chilled aperitif, as it comes or with a liqueur such as crème de cassis. (Sale price: €19)

L’Ami des Crustacés Pinot Blanc Classique, Gustave Lorentz, a delicate bouquet which exhales white flower, honey, melon and citrus aromas. The mouth is lively, dry, pleasant and perfectly balanced with a well-integrated acidity and a touch of minerality. (Sale price: €15)

Meursault, Louis Latour, Meursault tend to be very full, mellow wines and mature somewhat sooner than the wines from the neighbouring communes of Puligny and Chassagne. The Meursault 2017, with its pale yellow colour, offers a nose plenty of fruit flavours: peach, melon and exotic fruits with a superb biscuity finish. (Sale price: €42)

Cersius Rouge, IGP Coteaux de Béziers, Alma Cersius, the Cersius vineyards located in the Coteaux de béziers IGP are kissed by the “Winds of Cersius the Wind God” which were hailed by the Romans for their beneficial qualities for maturing fruit crops. (Sale price: €10)

Châteauneuf-Du-Pape Domaine St. Patrice, the unique character of this wine comes from the diversity of its terroirs. The clay and sand-rich soils with dominant pure white clay and red clay covered with worn pebbles and limestone rocks and traces of yellow clay constitute the solid foundations on which our wines blossom. (Sale price: €30)

2010 Chateau La Garde Red, Pessac Leognan, the Cabernet Sauvignon dominant blend reveals a complex bouquet of red and black fruits, intermingling with smoky, mocha notes. The fresh, fruity and unctuous palate, with its remarkable fine-grained tannins, shows no hint of harshness, despite the wine’s depth and concentration. (Sale price: €30)

O’Callaghan has pinpointed two factors that contribute to Irish consumers’ love of French wine; the first is the long-standing tradition of the region. “When you consider the style and diversity, coupled with the history of knowing what is best for each wine, you can see why France has stood the test of time.”

Secondly, he credits the second-generation wine makers for continuing to refresh the brands in order to stay relevant to modern consumers. “I have noted a change in generations of wine makers being reflected in the wines delivered. The labels are more challenging and reflective of a more modern consumer and we can see the vinification process being more reflective of modern wine drinking.”

The French Wine Sale will be available in all SuperValu stores nationwide and online at www.SuperValu.ie from Thursday 5th September, until Thursday 26thSeptember 2019.
