This Quirky Night Out in Town is Just the Greatest Craic you Can Have on a Tuesday

Want to do something different and fun? Then Ukulele Tuesday is at The Stag’s Head a must-try experience. The meetup takes places every (guess) Tuesday at the popular pub and it is the perfect occasion to listen to ukulele covers of great songs, sing along and even venture into playing a few tunes yourself!

The session starts at 8:00 pm in the upstairs bar at The Stag’s Head and finishes around 11:00 pm. The event is free and you can drop by at any time. James O’Farrell, who was our host on a recent evening we went to check it out, explained that the group has been meeting for almost a decade and that there are similar groups in other parts of the world.

The core group arrives to the bar earlier to set everything up, including a projector to everyone can see the lyrics and the chords of the songs as they’re played (imagine karaoke taken to the next level). They have an official songbook available to download for free with over 200 songs featuring all styles and genres, expect to see names such as Queen, David Bowie, Amy Winehouse and The Rolling Stones, along with other classics or pop and rock.

James explained that while several of the core group members are musicians (and in fact they’re often hired and invited to play at events and festivals) but you don’t need to be one to have a great time. “Everyone is welcome to play, sing and sometimes dance and we even have loaner Ukuleles for those who want to give it a try”, he said.

Besides ukuleles, some people bring flutes, harmonicas, tambourines and other smaller instruments to take the sesh to the next level. James mentions that they get a great mix of tourists and locals, and that on good nights, they easily stay playing until past midnight.

Whether you’re looking to meet new people or for a fun and different night out with your friends or partner, Ukulele Tuesdays are definitively one plan to add to your Dublin bucket list.
