Vigneron d’Arry Osborn from d’Arenberg Receives Legend of the Wine Award

Vigneron and current Managing Director of d’Arenberg, d’Arry Osborn, has been named the 2016 South Australian Legend of the Vine by Wine Communicators of Australia. At 89 years of age, d’Arry Osborn receives this award, created to honour those who have made outstanding contributions to the Australian wine industry.

d’Arry’s grandfather purchased the d’Arenberg property in 1912, his father built the winery in 1927, and at only 16 of age, in 1943, d’Arry started working with his father, making fortified wine for export to England. In 1957, d’Arry assumed full control of the business after his father’s death, and in 1959 launched a label named in honour of his mother, Helena d’Arenberg. It was his idea to put the red stripe on the label, inspired by his school days at Prince Alfred College. Today the detail adorns each d’Arenberg bottle and can be seen in the 60 countries to which the wine is exported.

In 1958, he joined the Wine and Brandy Producers Association of South Australia, to which he is now an honorary life member. Through his career, he performed leading roles in several wine organisations and festivals in the region.

He has received several prestigious recognitions in the past, including the Queen’s Jubilee Medal (1978), Patron of the Australian Wine Industry (1995), Medal of the Order of Australia in the Queens Birthday honours (2004), and the Business SA’s Industry Champions Award (2014).
