Tonight at 7.30pm on RTE One Windy Arbour Residents Cook up a Storm in Fourth Series of Tastes Like Home with Catherine Fulvio

Londis helps bring Taste of Home to Portuguese family now living in Windy Arbour

Portuguese family Sofia & Tiago Magalhães are one of twelve contestants to feature in the returning popular RTE ONE series, Taste Like Home, with Catherine Fulvio and sponsored by Londis.

Sofia & husband Tiago Magalhães, who are Portuguese but now live in Windy Arbour, Dublin hit the spotlight in episode three of the fourth series, which is due to air on RTE ONE at 19:30pm on 18th November. The show opens with Sofia & Tiago asking Catherine to meet their friends João and his wife Teresa who live in Faro Portugal who will teach Catherine to cook the iconic Portuguese dish a “Cataplana” which is the taste of Portugal they miss the most.

Tiago & João have been best friends, since meeting on a Portuguese beach aged 3 and now their wives and kids all holiday together each year, but now that friendship has expanded to now include their wives and children – as both families always holiday together each year.

We loved to participate in Taste Like Home and have the opportunity to show Catherine a little bit of Algarve culture and gastronomy. Now we invite all who are going to watch the program to come visit Faro and the Algarve, learn about our history and delight with our great food and wine.” said João Luís Amaro

Catherine travels to the famous Ria Formosa Nature Park in Olhão and takes a boat out to Culatra Island where she goes Oyster picking, she visits a local winery called Quinta da Tôr to taste wine. Catherine tours historic Faro, and visits Arco da Vila, Arco do Repouso, Praça Afonso III and the Faro Municipal Museum,  Carmo Church (Igreja do Carmo), is an 18th-century Church with an imposing baroque façade and the Bone Chapel (Capela dos Ossos) so named as it’s interior walls are covered and decorated with human skulls and bones, It’s one of the best-known monuments in Évora, Portugal.

João takes Catherine to the local Faro Market so she can learn a little more about Portugal, it’s food and favours, as well as buying ingredients for the “Algarve Cataplana”, the dish they will be making on the show. The Market sells fish, shellfish, fruit, vegetables and regional products. They also visit a local restaurant ‘Madrugada’ to taste some Portuguese cuisine Caracóis (snails), Ameijoas à Bulhão Pato (Clams in garlic sauce), Pataniscas de Camarão (shrimp “pataniscas”), Arroz de Corvina com camarão (croacker rice with shrimps) and Trilogy cake (almond, fid and carob) and Dom Rodrigo. They also visit João’s restaurant ‘Tertúlia Algarvia‘ and taste a tuna that is cured like a spanish ham Tuna Moxama, as well as Octopus tentacles, and a swiss roll made from Sweet potatoe.  João & wife Teresa then take Catherine to their home where she gets crash course on how to make the “Algarve Cataplana” so she can recreate it for Sofia & Tiago back in Dublin.

Teresa said “We loved participating in the program, it was a very enriching and fun experience. We are very proud of our gastronomy and culture, so it is always good to be able to share our riches with others and hope you enjoy them too. We really hope that you all enjoy “cataplana” and Algarve. I also hope that those who will see the program can have as much fun as we do and feel like coming to try our food!

Catherine is also introduced to a new dining concept which visitors can book when visiting Portugal, called the ‘Portuguese Table’, it’s a community of ‘home cooking chefs’ who serve traditional meals to visitors in their own homes. Catherine visits Ana and Francisco and discovers authentic Portuguese recipes using the best of local produce while sharing stories with locals.. Catherine also meets Paulo Castro, Co-Founder of Portuguese Table.

Back in Ireland the pressure in on, Catherine travels to St Enda’s Park nearly fifty acres of beautiful parkland, to meet Sofia + Tiago and their two children Joaquim (6 years old) and Ester (3 years old)  to see how they are enjoying live here in Ireland. Then it’s back to their home in Windy Arbour where Catherine cooks up her “Algarve Cataplana” and her Fig, Almond and Chocolate Tea Cake so fingers crossed it ‘tastes like home’ for  Sofia + Tiago.

It was an honour to be part of the program representing our country and culture. We had so much fun with the team and Catherine. And the food was gorgeous!!! It will always be a beautiful memory from our time in Ireland. Thank you!”  Sofia

Catherine Fulvio said “The Cataplana is one of my favourite seafood dishes in the world and it was wonderful having the opportunity to go to the local market to gather the ingredients for it.  Another local delicacy was snails which to be honest, would never be my first choice, but I’m now converted and I can report that they were really delicious! But the highlight for me was the Portuguese Table, whereby visitors can book to dine in a local family home and enjoy classic Portuguese cuisine and hospitality”.

Commenting on the successful partnership between Londis, Catherine Fulvio and RTÉ, Conor Hayes, Londis Sales Director, said, “We are delighted to be partnering with Catherine Fulvio and RTÉ for a fourth year on this TV series, bringing homely recipes to Irish families around the world. Much like Londis, Catherine values quality, local produce and bringing fresh contemporary ideas to the table.”

The popular TV series returns for six consecutive weeks, this November, promising a serving of delicious recipes steeped in tradition and a flavour of incredible culture and sights from locations right across the world. As well as delighting viewers with recipes, culture and captive travel, the series captures eight individual stories, from Irish contestants who refuse to let the physical distance from home, curb their appetite for a home-cooked meal, a taste of home.
