Wine of the Week from O’Briens: A Telleira Godello 2015

Everyone loves a good comeback story: from Rocky Balboa to Britney Spears, from Michael Jordan to the Gilmore Girls, and even Terminator. They all disappeared for a while, only to return and take over the world, or at least over our screens and speakers.

In nature, however, a comeback is harder to pull off, although it’s not unheard of for a species to reappear after being counted as gone. Fortunately for wine lovers, grapes are among the living creatures that are able to thrive again when the right hands decide to make them justice.

Wine of the Week from O'Briens: A Telleira Godello 2015A Telleira Godello 2015 is a Galician white wine made from the Godello variety, rediscovered in the seventies and though extinct along a long list of grapes that the voracious phylloxera destroyed in the 19th century.

Far from a Jurassic Park-style cautionary tale, bringing back Godello from the dead is a success story still in the writing. It is mainly seen in northwestern Spain, and Galician winemakers in particular have been great at adapting it to modern palates.

This particular bottle by Grupo Reboreda Morgadío shows delicate nose with a very friendly palate where a medium acidity and a blend of fresh white fruit, ripe citrus, pineapples and honeysuckle notes live in harmony.

It’s light and refreshing as a friendly conversation (which would actually be a great thing to pair it with!), but it’s not all small talk: four months on its lees contribute to give it a pleasant lemon curd note and a more voluptuous body, so just like a good sense of humor and a few witty comments make the chat memorable, this wine is peachy and easy to drink but never dull.

It’s agreeability makes it a wild card when it comes to wine pairings. If you’re looking for a bit of inspiration, check out these homemade chicken kievs or a calabrese swordfish pizzaiola.

A Telleira Godello is available at O’Briens Wines at €14.95, currently on offer from €18.95.
