When you blush, your hearts beats faster and the veins in your face dilate allowing more blood to carry the adrenaline your body thinks you’ll need. Even though in principle it’s the same, you know that a blush that comes after a good scare feels different than one achieved after a good laugh or a good kiss.
And as the palette of human’s blushing goes from a rosy Oh no! to a bright pink Oh yes! the intensity of the colour in wines is also varied as winemakers can get playful with the style and create rosés that are rich and powerful as coral or delicate and graceful as a ballerina.
Naranjas Azules Rosé 2015 is on the lighter side, a modern and gentle wine made from Grenache or Garnacha, as they call the grape the wine’s home region Castilla y León, located in northwestern Spain. There, almost barren sandy soils and harsh Mediterranean weather forces the vines to dig deep for nutrients and to hold tightly onto them in their resulting fruits.
The vineyard, Soto y Manrique, makes small batch wines from grapes coming from the family’s 8 hectares, 3 of which are destined for Grenache. Jesús Mª Soto, winemaker, aimed to make of this winery a very personal project where the main goal was to let the varieties express themselves, valuing simplicity and freshness.
There are only 30,000 bottles of this wine out there and it will be a good idea to get one before the summer ends as it’s just one of those rosés that you can simply pair with a sunny day.
With 13% ABV, it feels light but not watery. It is cold fermented in steel tanks without prior maceration and the wine barely has any contact with the grape’s skin hence its colour is a pale, powdery pink that speaks of its delicate aromas of wild strawberries and white flowers.
On the palate it feels mouthwatering and refreshing, it has the pleasant acidity of a raspberry sherbet with a dainty herbal touch of mint.
