Wineleather, the Glamorous and Cruelty-Free Innovation that Could Shake the Fashion Industry

When tasting wines, you will encounter leather (well, just leather aromas) every now and then, but a new connection between these two elements might shake the fashion industry very soon. Milan-based company Vegea has developed a cruelty-free leather-like product made from grapes and named Wineleather.

Founded in 2016, Vegea took home the Global Change Award last April thanks to this innovation. These awards are organised by the H&M Foundation and aim to make the fashion industry waste-free and sustainable. Gianpiero Tessitore, the Italian architect behind this invention has pointed out how grape skins and other byproducts of wine are virtually free and widely available, which has the potential to make a large scale production of Wineleather very competitive.

As they describe on their website, Wineleather is “a vegetal leather-like material produced through a specific processing of fibers and oils contained in grape marc, which is a fully natural raw material consisting of the grape skins, stalks and seeds obtained from wine making.”

It combines two of Italy’s highest regarded industries: winemaking and fashion, and “it is the new way to be fashionable and eco-friendly at the same time.”

The potential for this innovation goes beyond clothes and accessories as car interiors, furniture and other consumer goods feature leather parts.
