Cork Bartender to Travel to Mexico for Global Final of the Bacardi Legacy Competition
Cork bartender Tony Barry has secured a place in the world final of the prestigious Bacardi Legacy Competition and he will be travelling to Mexico next spring where he’ll represent Ireland.
He was chosen as part of a group of ten bartenders that excelled at the Northern European finals, which took place in Amsterdam. The global finalist, which were announced last night at the end of the competition are Didier Van den Broek (Belgium), Leon Black (UK), Eric Ban Beek (Netherlands), Harald Gröbl (Austria), Kacper Dylak (Switzerland), Damien Guichard (Germany), Carl Marcus Erlandson (Sweden), Carl Wiman (Norway) and Henri Halonen (Finland).
Tony currently works in multi award-winning Cask bar in Cork, and has worked in several high-profile bars in the Rebel City. He graduated in Bar Management from Cork Institute of Technology.
He was part of a group of three bartenders from Ireland participating in the Northern European final, the other two being Martin Holec, who works at The Sitting Room in Delahunt and Richie Delahoyde, from the Vintage Cocktail Club, both from Dublin.
Alan Kavanagh, Advocacy Development Manager at Edward Dillon & Co, told TheTaste that now Tony will have the opportunity to meet past winners who will help him prepare for the final. Once he’s back in Ireland, he will have the opportunity to promote his cocktail nationally and across Europe with a series of eventsand tastings as well as in the media.
Tony’s winning cocktail was named “A Hug From Mary”, a combination of Bacardi Ocho, Irish Stout, Sherry, coffee and bitters. Alan explained that “it’s very easy to make this cocktail in any bar, and each ingredients represents a moment in Tony’s career”, from his first pint, to the first drink he perfected (the Irish Coffee), to his love for Sherry, it all comes together in the glass.
He added that the cocktail’s name is inspired by the closely knit community of bartenders in Cork and their tradition of taking guests, specially from the trade, to the beloved Castle Inn pub and ask for “a hug from Mary”, meaning a pint.
Cask has been on a roll in the awards scene, as recently the bar’s team have earned other important international awards.
