Fans of Bitter Drinks More Likely to Have Dark Personalities, Science Says

Do you prefer your coffee black… like your soul? Fans of IPAs, tonic water and bitter drinks might start preparing their alibis as a study conducted by scientists at the University of Innsbruck in Austria suggests that a preference for this sort of flavour is “might be associated with antisocial personality traits.”

In two studies, the group investigated the premise over a population of nearly 1,000 subjects who self-reported their taste preferences and answered personality questionnaires “assessing Machiavellianism, psychopathy, narcissism, everyday sadism, trait aggression, and the Big Five factors of personality.”

The hypothesis was confirmed, as results showed that a preference for bitter foods and drinks was associated with “malevolent personality traits”, most often to sadism and psychopathy. The data, published on research journal Appetite, provided “insights into the relationship between personality and the ubiquitous behaviors of eating and drinking.”
