Blackwater Distillery will Launch a Single Malt Irish Whisky Retronaut this Weekend

Blackwater Distillery is located on the banks of the Blackwater River in West Waterford. After making headlines recently thanks to the launch of a Barry’s Tea Irish Gin, they have announced the debut date for their first Irish whisky.

Named “Retronaut“, the spirit will be formally introduced to the publish next week at Whiskey Live Dublin, one of the most important dates in the calendar for whiskey lovers in Ireland, taking place next Saturday 25th of November.

They have chosen to label it as Irish whisky, without the “e”, a decision that matches neighbouring Waterford Distillery and means that currently, whiskeys produced in this county have this point of difference. “All you have to know is that the universal ‘e’ in Irish whiskey is as recent as the early 1970’s. It relates back to the dark days when one company had a monopoly over the production of whiskey on this island”, reads a post on the distillery’s page.

Production of the Retronaut is very small, Blackwater Distillery announced via Twitter that there are only 1060 bottles.  It is a single malt Irish whisky aged 17 years, matured exclusively in ex-Bourbon casks, with an ABV of 46%.
