Celebrate International Toasted Cheese Sandwich Day with Dublin Cheese

International Grilled Cheese (aka Toasted Cheese) Sandwich Day takes place tomorrow, Tuesday 12th April. A survey conducted by Dubliner Cheese to celebrate the occasion shows that a toasted cheese special along with a cuppa tea tops the poll as Ireland’s favourite!

The study proves that as nation we have a serious love affair with the humble toasted cheese sandwich. 31.4% of respondents admitted to eating toasted cheese sandwiches more than once a week, with a further 30.6% eating them at least once a week. A toastie 58.2% admitting to eating most days as a quick and easy lunch for all the family to enjoy. Many (17.6%) choose the toastie as a winter warmer with soup on the side, while 17.1% best enjoy on a duvet day with crisps – the ultimate feel good comfort food.

Convenient, every home pretty much always has the ingredients to hand, and easy to make, it’s easy to see why we opt for a grilled cheese so regularly. While Ireland’s favourite way to toast is under the grill (43.2%), it can also be made in a George Foreman Grill (25.5%), in a traditional sandwich maker (20.2%), by using a toasty bag in the toaster, or simply by adding a slice of cheese to toast from the toaster.

The study revealed that we are all pretty much in agreement on the best way to serve a toastie; on white bread (47.9%), using block cheese (51.9%), cooked golden brown with oozes of cheese (83.9%) and served with a cuppa tea (68.7%). Red or white cheese came close to an even split, red (53.4%) and white (46.6%).

The toasted cheese sandwich is adaptable. It can be made healthier with reduced fat cheese, pimped up with Vintage cheese or made with added flavour when topped with extras such as tomato, ham and sauce. 35.5% of Irish ‘toastie’ loves choose the traditional ‘toastie’ special of ham, cheese, tomato and onion as their favourite combination, cheese and ham came in second favourite with 26.9% of the votes and 14.8% of us like to enjoy ‘something a bit different’.

Though it seems we are not as humble as the toasted cheese sandwich, and view ourselves as the ultimate ‘toastie’ connoisseurs. A whopping 66.7% of us believe that we make the best toasted cheese sandwich ever, followed by our partner at 13.9% with mum, dad and local pub barely making an appearance.

Sharing a toastie? Funnyman Graham Norton (35.5%) tops the poll as our favourite celebrity to share a toasted sandwich and cuppa tea with, followed by Taken hero Liam Neeson (22.7%). Jedward (22.5%) Marty Morrissey (21.2%) and Louis Walsh (20.8%) were voted the cheesiest celebrities in Ireland. And believe it or not overwhelmingly 77.6% of respondents admitted cheese would be on their death row meal.
