Cité des Vins de Bourgogne: Burgundy’s Ambitious Network of Museums Gets Green Light

Last year, Bordeaux’ Cité du Vin museum and theme park opened its doors and by 2018, Burgundy will unveil its own visitor centre, museum and culture network, Cité des Vins de Bourgogne, which will feature buildings in three sites within the region: Beaune, Chablis and Mâcon.

Burgundy’s wine bureau (BIVB) agreed to approve the project last December. Louis-Fabrice Latour, BIVB’s president, said the project will “affect an entire generation. Unlike Bordeaux’s Cité du Vin, Cité des Vins de Bourgogne won’t have a global scope, and it will focus on the Burgundian region instead.

It is expected that the project will “give structure to the region”, as expressed on a communicate from Bourgogne Wines.

“As with any project, there is a level of uncertainty that we would like to reduce as much as possible before we start work. We still have lots to do with all our partners, including the Association for the Climats of Bourgogne, the tourism industry, and the local and regional authorities involved”, added Louis-Fabrice Latour, who praised the board’s decision to green light Cité des Vins de Bourgogne.

The project was launched initially in 2012 and it has been reported that it’s not a reply to Bordeaux’ wine theme park and museum, which represented an €80 million investment. Instead, it will be “a well-designed welcome with a contemporary approach to everyone who wishes to discover or rediscover the Bourgogne region and its wines, whilst respecting their history and traditions,” Pierre-Henry Gagey explained, during the presentation preceding the vote.

Each Cité des Vins de Bourgogne will allow visitors to find out more about Bourgogne wines, with shared content and communication tools, and each site will also act as a local showcase of the area’s heritage and tradition, as well as of the Climats of the Bourgogne winegrowing region, included on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
