Coeliac Society of Ireland Gluten Free Instore Events with SuperValu

The Coeliac Society of Ireland and SuperValu are hosting a series of instore evening events from Tuesday 12th April to Tuesday 19th April. The events are to raise awareness for the work of the Coeliac Society and to showcase the instore Health and Wellbeing aisles within selected SuperValu stores.

The evenings will be supported by local coeliac support groups, outlining the benefits and support the Coeliac Society offer those suffering from coeliac disease, as well as for their families. This includes an invaluable Food List, which references all of the gluten-free products available on the Irish market, making shopping much easier.

Each event will feature a dietitic talk focussing on signs and symptoms, first diagnosis, understanding food labels and your gut health.

On the evening the local support group will offer a walk-through instore using the Coeliac Society Food List explaining food labelling. With sampling and promotions on the night, it will be a fun and interactive evening on gluten free living.

Commenting in advance of the instore events, CEO of the Coeliac Society of Ireland, Gráinne Denning said: “The instore SuperValu events are a great opportunity for people who may have some of the symptoms of coeliac disease to meet with fellow coeliacs and also speak to a dietitian. One in 100 people in Ireland has coeliac disease and it can be challenging for them to figure out what they can eat, as gluten is a common ingredient in food. These include many not generally associated with wheat, barley or rye, such as gravy, soy sauce and beer.”

James Bruen SuperValu Trading Manager, said: “We are delighted to support the work of the Coeliac Society. Over the past number of years we have seen a real increase in the demand for gluten-free products in our stores. We have developed a range of high quality and great tasting products that not only meet this demand but also offer good value. We see these events as an opportunity to showcase our range of gluten-free products and to raise awareness of coeliac disease in Ireland.”

Coeliac disease is estimated to affect 46,000 people in Ireland. It is an auto-immune disease, which prevents those affected from digesting gluten, a protein found in wheat, barley and rye. The disease can manifest itself at any stage in a person’s lifetime, with symptoms including abdominal pain, recurring mouth-ulcers, weight-loss, vomiting and diarrhoea. The only treatment is a gluten-free diet.

Although gluten free products are being more and more available there is often confusion on what coeliac disease is. Coeliac disease is an auto-immune disease that prevents those affected from digesting gluten, a protein found in wheat, barley and rye. The disease can manifest itself at any stage in a person’s lifetime, with symptoms including abdominal pain, recurring mouth-ulcers, weight-loss, vomiting and diarrhoea.
