An Afternoon With an International Twist – Cork International Hotel Afternoon Tea Review

Heading off or returning from a holiday anytime soon? If so, make sure you include a pitstop at the Cork International Hotel for a spot of Afternoon Tea.

Perfect for a mother-daughter treat or an afternoon with the girls, this family friendly Afternoon Tea takes place in the hotel’s bright and airy foyer, or else inside the chic bar.

Happily taking a seat next to the fireplace, myself and my guest settled in for an afternoon of indulgence in the rebel county.

Our Afternoon Tea experience was part of an overall stay at the hotel (read about it here), so we were definitely taking advantage of all this airport hotel with a difference has to offer.

Close to both the city centre and on the doorstep of the airport (though far enough away that you don’t hear any noise from incoming and outgoing planes), the location is perfect for a weekend escape, either for rest and recuperation or as a hub to explore the city.

Sipping our tea and catching up on all the latest news, we barely noticed the generous portions of food making their way to our table.

From first glance, it was clear that this is a very family friendly Afternoon Tea, with options to please both children and adults alike.

While you are usually presented with a single tray or a multiple-tiered tray, here at the Cork International Hotel, the savoury selection of treats were displayed on a black slate, while the desserts were scattered over three tiers and an accompanying plate.

There was more than enough for two people to be well-fed based on the savoury selection alone, but we decided to test the strength of our appetites.

The savoury selection included classic Afternoon Tea sandwiches like cucumber, egg salad and ham and cheese. While the ham and cheese would take the fancy of younger guests, the smoked salmon on brown bread caught the attention of myself and my mother.

Next up was a terribly generous portion of mini cheesecakes. From a sweet lemon berry toffee and the classic strawberry cream cheesecake to a beautiful mango cream cheesecake decorated with desiccated coconut, it was a real taste of summer.

The perfect little treat was the toffee cheesecake with a biscuit base. It vanished from the plate faster than I thought possible.

After all of that sweetness, we needed a little break, taking a moment to sip our tea and tackle the scones.

Following the scones, which always remind me of my youth, we turned our eyes to the two tempting glasses which were topped with fruit – an oreo cheesecake and a lemon curd.

Definitely one for the kids (or big kids like myself), the oreo cheesecake tasted of pure indulgence, especially after delicately plucking the mint leaf and strawberry from the top of the glass.

My companion devoured the tangy lemon curd as I’m not the biggest fan of citrus based desserts. Referring to it as beautifully soft and zingy but sweet, it went down a treat.

After those two sweet treats, it was time for my chocolate-obsessed tooth to be satisfied with an incredibly smooth, melt-in-the-mouth dark chocolate sphere.

It was messy, but the best kind of messy. Dusted with cacao powder, this indulgent bite was so rich and definitely the highlight of this afternoon tea experience for me.

Afternoon Tea at the 4-star Cork International Hotel was incredibly relaxing and the perfect way to kickstart our weekend in Cork city.

Incredibly affordable, Afternoon Tea is priced from €40.00 for 2 People and is available from 1-5pm.
