Delighfully Unusual Eastern European and New World Wines Arriving to Aldi
Last week we were invited to the Aldi Wine Festival where we had the opportunity to taste over two dozen new wines that will be available at Aldi Ireland starting next Sunday 21st of August.
While your usual suspects -France, Italy and Spain- were well represented with Circuit du Rhone Côtes du Rhône Villages Cairanne 2014, Palmento Nero D’Avola Siciliana 2015, and Mayoral Jumilla Reserva, it was the unusual additions which caught our eyes.
From less known but promising Eastern European countries to not so famous grapes from well established New World destinations, here are our favourite picks coming soon to Aldi (by the way, they are terrific value so most of these are likely to disappear from the shelves before people start putting up their Halloween decorations).
12% ABV – €7.99
Clean, clear and very pale.
Very floral, with jasmine notes and a touch of stone fruit.
A medium acidity and a delicate minerality complement the initial flower-oriented character.
It’s very refreshing and light, good with dishes that share these features such as salads, grilled vegetables or crab.
Argentina, San Juan
13.5% ABV – €7.99
Argentina’s most popular white grape might not be as big as Malbec outside South America, but it offers an aromatic and pronounced white with character.
A mixture of citrus and floral aromas of elderflower and honeysuckle are balanced by a savoury touch.
Lovely next to Thai food or spicy chicken dishes.
New Zealand, Gisborne
13.5% ABV – €8.99
We might be familiar with Sauvignon Blanc from Marlborough but New Zealand is not a one trick pony.
This North Island region is earning a name thanks to elegant wines, and this one shows a similarity to Alsatian ones, which is hinted at by the use of the “flute” bottle, characteristic of the appellation.
Pleasant acidity, pear and cherimoya flavours and very refreshing.
13.5% ABV – €8.99
The dark horse of the tasting, and we don’t mean that only because its stylish label but because this blend of the widely known Shiraz and the regional Feteasca.
Gentle tannins and ripe berries stumble into an unexpected smokiness and warm spice. It’s rich and medium bodied, on the palate it gets a touch of grenadine and the fruit becomes darker.
New Zealand, Hawkes Bay
13% ABV – €9.99
Another “kiwi” off the beaten track, this delicate red is a lovely example of what the variety can do in the region. It’s also one to watch, as the country realises its potential for fine Syrah.
Medium tannins and a good balance between fruitiness and spice, leaning towards nutmeg and clove with a bit of pepper.
It would be a good match fro pasta and lightly seasoned beef dishes.
