DIT Wins the 31st IHI Hospitality Business Management Game

A team of five students from DIT have won this year’s Hospitality Business Management Game, the annual competition organised by the Irish Hospitality Institute.

Captain Conor Bradley, Shane Browne, Paul Fitzsimons, Caroline McDevitt and Katie Scanlan are all studying for a B.Sc in International Hospitality Management.

Over two days at the Croke Park Hotel the team devised a business strategy under strict financial constraints reflective of the current state of the industry. The strategy had to contain a practical application specific to The Doyle Collection and was applied to a restaurant business simulation programme called The Simr.

The team from DIT saw off competition from schools all over Ireland including Institutes of Technology in Athlone, Galway-Mayo, Letterkenny, Tralee, Dublin and Shannon College of Hotel Management.

They scored top marks to win the overall prize, an exclusive wine evening in the Ambassade de France Residence in Dublin including a private tuition on the world famous wine of Domaine Laroche presented by their internationally renowned sommelier Anne Roque. The team will also be flown out to Domaine Laroche to experience the workings of the vineyards and the winery.

Speaking at the awards ceremony Natasha Kinsella FIHI, Chief Executive of IHI, said: “As we look back over The Business Management Game in its 31st year, elements of the Games have not changed and have always been focused on the challenges and addressing the current issues facing the hospitality industry. What has changed is the breadth of the industry; customer expectations and the new opportunities now on offer. Today’s competitors demonstrated a clear ability and an excellent understanding of how to achieve those goals. Irrespective of individual results, all contestants here today will leave the games with a template that can and will work for many years ahead.
