Calls From the Past – Have you Chatted to Dublin’s Famous Statues Yet?

Visitors to Dublin can now take a call from some of the city’s most famous statues thanks to a new tourism initiative.

Dublin’s Talking Statues features a number of Irish actors bringing the words of Irish authors to life, with Gabriel Byrne, Ruth Negga, Andrew Scott and Roddy Doyle all contributing their talents.

According to their website, “Talking Statues breathes new life into the statues that surround us. Some approaches are dramatic, others comic and others flights of pure fantasy. All aim to persuade the public look at the statues with new eyes.”

There are 10 talking statues around Dublin, including James Joyce, Oscar Wilde and George Bernard Shaw.

As you stroll by the statues, plaques will encourage you to use their smartphones to swipe a QR code or access a weblink.

You will then receive a phone call with the specially recorded monologue, so you feel as though you are getting a call from the past.

The project was funded by Fáilte Ireland and developed by art producers, Sing London, with support from Dublin City Council.
