TheTaste Launch Food Tourism and Creativity Award with University of Ulster

TheTaste.ie are excited to announce the launch of a new award opportunity in partnership with Ulster University.

On 5th of February Dr Peter Bolan, Director of International Travel & Tourism Management (ITTM) at Ulster University, invited Managing Director of TheTaste, Keith Mahon and ITTM Course Ambassador Denise Flynn, to the Coleraine campus to meet with the first year students studying food tourism.

Food Tourism & Creativity Award

Students from three courses were present: International Travel & Tourism Management, Consumer Management & Food Innovation and Leisure & Event Management. The degrees are designed for students who want to work in Travel and Tourism, Events and the Food industry as well as Business Management and Leadership across these diverse sectors.

TheTaste.ie Food Tourism and Creativity Award will be presented for the best student article on a food festival or experience for visitors through the Food Tourism, Festivals and Events module they undertake this semester.

Food Tourism & Creativity Award

This module allows them to learn about the growing world of food tourism, and how food festivals, tours and events can be a huge draw to tourists and also enhance their experience when visiting Ireland.

During the visit, they discussed how travel and tourism are now some of the world’s largest sectors and are highly customer focused and media influenced. They also highlighted how important social media and technology is when building a successful business.

In November 2018 Northern Ireland was awarded best food destination at the International Travel and Tourism Awards in London, continuing a legacy of the NI Year of Food and Drink 2016.

In July 2019 all eyes will be on the Royal Portrush Golf Club as they host the 148th Open Championship. In addition, HBO has announced plans to convert several film locations into tourist attractions this year so there is plenty to talk about.

Food Tourism & Creativity Award

Students have been assigned to write an article on a topic of their choice within a set brief led by Mrs Maria Simone-Charteris (module coordinator for Food Tourism, Festivals & Events). They will write about how they view the food scene in Ireland in general and how this can enhance a tourism experience.

The winning article will be featured in a future edition of TheTaste, giving the students an amazing opportunity and platform as they progress their careers. Recently TheTaste won Best in Media and Publishing at The Spiders Awards 2018.
