This Contemporary Cafe is a Sweet Addition to Dublin City Centre – Honey Truffle Café Review

With its modern grey and red shop front, Honey Truffle is a newly opened eatery on the bustling, but sparsely populated food-wise, Pearse Street that you can’t help but notice.

The contemporary signage and full length window will draw you in, and once inside the space continues to ooze style.

Clad in white and soaked in natural light, with art exhibited throughout, the obvious eye for presentation extends far beyond the interior decor and the cafe boasts an impressive food display not unlike those at Yotam Ottolenghi’s London delis.

Honey Truffle Café Review

The café, established by former Avoca head chef Eimer Rainsford, takes as much inspiration from local Irish craftspeople, from the vibrant picture frames from Rocker Lane Workshop, to the food served on gorgeous wooden plates from Tony Farrell. Their food menu, packed with a range of salads and sandwiches, relies heavily on local artisan suppliers too.

Spread over two levels, at the front of the cafe you’ll find the food and coffee counter, while the highly-ceilinged rear of the cafe hosts the seating area.

Although I’m an avid coffee-lover, their hot chocolate powered by Cocoa Atelier, the French-inspired, Irish-owned chocolate boutique on Drury Street, caused me to hesitate before reeling off my coffee order.

I started my lunch with a flat white using Brazilian beans from the lovely people at Baobab Coffee Roasters, based in Celbridge, that on the menu promise chocolatey notes and lightness of red berries. This combination seemed right for milk, to accentuate that natural sweetness.

I was pleasantly surprised with the quality of the coffee poured. Often eateries or cafes struggle to transfer their high quality of food into a cup of Joe. Honey Truffle, however, treated me to a tasty white coffee, with a creamy texture and an impressive, very Instagrammable, latte art heart.

The food counter was adorned with a colourful display of freshly made salads and sandwiches. I opted for one of the many veggie options available, the Super Food Salad in Pitta, which arrived with quinoa slaw on a bed of caramelised onion hummus, a beetroot dip and a scattering of pomegranate seeds – further evidence of Israeli chef Ottolenghi’s influence.

My companion went for the salad bowl option, choosing, as the menu board explains, his choice of three (you can also order just two) of the daily salads, in this case a grain salad, quinoa slaw and Caesar salad.

Next, the friendly staff added some green leaves, and the topping, dip, seeds or cheese of his choice – he went for the gently spiced yoghurt with cumin and lemon. There’s the option to add marinated Irish chicken or chickpea, potato and pea cakes too.

The flavour combination was bold and vibrant, and the portion hearty enough to leave him with a full stomach and no sugar cravings to satisfy.

My sweet tooth is one that can rarely be satiated however, and there was no way I could resist their sumptuous pastry display, so before wrapping up my lunch, I had to grab a few of their bakes. From the stunning selection of artfully decorated pastries I ended up with the Honey Truffle Christmas Tartlet and Chocolate Brownie.

The former turned out to be a mince pie in disguise. This petit beaut was loaded with spice and textures, but just a little too sweet for my taste. The well-balanced Chocolate brownie however hit the jackpot flavour-wise for me. Sarah’s Raw Bites are up for grabs for a healthier post-meal treat too.

Currently open on weekdays only, though there is word that they may soon open on Saturday, Honey Truffle is a sweet addition to Dublin’s ever (honey) blossoming food scene. Watch this space, people.
