Ireland’s Julie Dupouy Made it to the Top 10 at the Best Sommelier of Europe & Africa Contest 2017
Best Sommelier in Ireland Julie Dupouy participated at the Best Sommelier of Europe & Africa Contest 2017, held on the 11th May at the Park Hotel Schónbrunn in Vienna, Austria. She was representing the Irish Guild of Sommeliers at the event, in which she managed to secure the seventh place.
Last year Julie Dupouy won 3rd place at the World Sommelier Contest in Mendoza, Argentina. She’s the head sommelier at Dublin’s Greenhouse Restaurant and the brand ambassador for Champagne Brands with Edward Dillion and Co. Ltd.
The competition included 37 sommeliers from 34 European and 3 African countries. The winner of the first place was Raimond Tomsons from Riga, Latvia.
The competition’s final involved the challenge of serve guests at a mock up restaurant table. Sommeliers were instructed to offer Sake as an aperitif and justify the selection. Two and a half minutes were given for them to prepare.
Pouring a magnum, suggesting pairings including bottles from different countries for each dish and blind tasting were also some of the challenges in the competition.
Each candidate in the competition was accompanied by an official delegation composed of an accredited journalist and by the President of the Sommelier association of that country. Mary O’ Callaghan, President and Andrew O’ Gorman, Journalist & Secretary Irish Guild of Sommeliers represented the Irish Guild of Sommeliers.
The President of the Austrian Sommelier Union, Annemarie Foidl expressed her delight with the success of the competition, as it was the first time the European and African Sommelier organisations cooperating together on an inter-continental contest.
