Louis Latour, Grand Monsieur of Burgundy, Has Passed Away Aged 83

Louis Latour, brilliant négociant and producer, has died at the age of 83. Born in 1932, he represented the 10th generation of the family and took charge of Maison Louis Latour in 1958.

He led the modernisation of the business, becoming a well known innovator in Burgundy. When his son succeeded him in 1999, his efforts had already positioned him as one of the great producers and businessmen of his region.

Among his achievements, it’s worth mentioning the company’s move into the Ardèche to produce Chardonnay in 1979 and in 1989, he repeated the feat by deciding to make Pinot Noir at Domaine Valmoissine, in the Var.

In the late 70s, he oversaw the construction of Clos Chameroy, a modern winemaking facility near the Beune, and he looked after the opening of subsidiaries in the US (1986) and the UK (1990). He had he honour of presiding over Maison Louis Latour’s bicentennial celebrations in 1997 and as his son, Louis-Fabrice Latour sums up, “he had a good life” and “he was one of the grands monsieurs of Burgundy”. Louis-Fabrice acknowledges that his father did great things for the Maison Latour and he attributes to him all that the business has came to be today.

The funeral for Louis Latour was held last Saturday 9th of April and he will be laid to rest in the cemetery of Burgundian community Aloxe-Corton.
